On average, each year in Italy produces about 6-7 million tons of olive oil.
The production is a prerogative of southern Italy.
The figures speak for themselves: Puglia, Calabria and Sicily have an impact on domestic production by more than 85 % of all the olive oil produced in our country. The remaining production that has some relevance if the divide Tuscany, Liguria, Umbria and Abruzzo.
Italy is the second largest producer of olive oil in Europe and in the world with a national average of more than 6 million tons, of which two thirds are extra.
There are 39 DOP (protected designation of origin) and 1 IGP (protected geographical indication) recognized by European Union.

Basilicata and Sardinia have a much smaller number of companies to olive growing.
Puglia as well as excel in the field of quantity it does also in quality: they are less than 5 varieties of PDO recognized.
